Tour Itinerary

From my experience of running countless photography tours, having a fixed daily itinerary is limiting your chances of going home with the best possible images.

Although this may look like a rigid itinerary, it is simply an example of how the trip could run. Everything is flexible right up until the last minute, and I will adjust our plans based on the conditions. My goal is to have people shooting in the best light at the right time. No two days will look the same—one day, we could be shooting from sunset through to sunrise, while another day, we might shoot sunrise, return to rest, then head out again at midday for a different session. This ensures that you always get the most out of your time in the Faroes.

I like to work with the weather as much as possible and visit locations based on the current conditions. As an example, you can drive through a tunnel where on one side it’s clear blue skies and the other side there’s a blizzard.

Each evening I will “plan” the next day and let everyone know what time we’ll be leaving. This ensures that I’m putting you in the right place at the right time.

The tour starts from Vágar Airport (FAE), Faroe Islands. When looking at flights, please arrive no later than 5PM on arrival day. If your flight arrives after this, drop me a message and I will help you as best I can.

If you are travelling the day before, just let me know so I can arrange to collect you.

Day 1 – Arrival Day

This is the arrival day, I’ll be collecting everyone from the airport. Depending on what time everyone lands, we will squeeze in a sunset shoot. We’ll get settled into our accommodation for the next week and run over the “plan” for the week. Retiring early for our start the next morning.

Day 2 to 7 – The Adventure

This is where the real adventure begins.

Over the next 6 full days, we will be photographing at every opportunity we can get. In June, the best light lasts from before sunset all the way through until after sunrise. The golden light is continuous, making this one of the most incredible times of year for photography in the Faroe Islands.

Each day, we will be shooting for a minimum of 8–10 hours, starting 2–3 hours before sunset and continuing until at least 1 hour after sunrise. This ensures we are capturing the landscapes in the most stunning light possible. After sunrise, we’ll return for breakfast and rest before preparing for the next session.

Not every day will be the same. Some days, depending on the weather, we may adjust our schedule to shoot at different times of the day. My approach is always to put you in the best locations at the best possible time.

Some locations require ferry travel, and not all ferries run during the night. For example, if we travel to Kalsoy, we will take the 22:15 ferry and remain on the island until the next ferry at 6:40 AM. These logistics will be factored into our daily plans, ensuring we maximise our shooting opportunities while working with the available transport schedules.

One of the highlights of visiting the Faroe Islands in June is the abundance of seabirds, including puffins, gannets, fulmars, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. We will take a day trip to Mykines, the island with the largest puffin colony in the Faroes, giving us an incredible opportunity to photograph these birds up close in their natural habitat. This will be a special addition to the trip, offering a break from landscape photography and a chance to capture incredible wildlife in stunning coastal scenery.

The sleep schedule on this trip will be very different from everyday life, but there will be plenty of time to recover. With long rest periods during the day, you’ll have time to recharge before heading out for the next session.

On the final evening, we’ll head out for our final meal together, where we can look back on an amazing week of photography.

Day 8 – Departure Day

We will continue our sunset-to-sunrise shoot, making the most of our last opportunity to capture the stunning Faroese landscapes in the best light.

After sunrise, we’ll return to our accommodation to get packed, sleep, and prepare for departure.

Usually, we’ll leave for the airport around midday, where we’ll say our goodbyes or rather, see you later, as I hope you’ll join me on another adventure.

Weather Contingency Plan

The Faroe Islands are known for their fast-changing weather, which is why flexibility is key. If conditions prevent us from shooting at a planned time, we will adjust accordingly. This could mean shifting our session to a different time of day or taking advantage of the downtime for an editing and image review session, allowing you to refine your shots and develop your editing skills. The goal is to make sure that even when the weather doesn’t cooperate, you’re still getting the most out of the trip.

THE REVIEWS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

Just got back from the Iceland tour. This was undoubtedly one of the best trips I have embarked on. Tyler definitely knows his stuff and brought us to each location at the best time of the day. We just needed to sit back, relax, and let him do his thing. It also meant that I was free of the hassle of looking at the substorm activity and weather when chasing the northern lights, having chased them on my own for a number of years only without much luck. I can imagine this is no easy job as the plan and itinerary of each day needed to change every hour depending on the weather and how crowded the locations were. Tyler is also the most encouraging when shooting on location, giving just the right amount of guidance and lots of freedom. I met the best companions on this tour, and I never would have thought I would bring home such precious memories. I have recommended Tyler to several of my friends, and I personally am looking forward to my next tour already.

I loved the high level of intensity from early mornings to late nights waiting on the aurora. Most importantly, your advance location work meant I could give ample time and full attention to the play of light on the vistas before me~without the distractions of logistics planning or renting a car. I appreciated your flexibility and sense of timing to drive us to ideal locations at the best moment for the light. An added plus was being in the international company of three other dedicated photographers who were jolly good companions!

Just back from a fabulous workshop in Lofoten with Tyler. First off - Lofoten is a landscape photographer’s paradise with a multitude of stunning locations all within easy reach. This means more time photographing and less time driving between photo stops. Bear in mind that the weather is volatile. and can be absolutely wild. This means potentially days lost (as we found out) but can also give some incredible shooting conditions as the storms clear. Tyler is a superb photographer (check out his images if you haven't done so) and he knows the locations intimately. He is knowledgable and willing to provide as much guidance as you need or to leave you alone to do your own thing if that's what you prefer. He is also very skilled in using Lightroom/Photoshop and gave us a tutorial one evening which was incredibly useful. The upshot is that you are bound to come back with lots of memorable and stunning images. Oh, and Tyler has a great instinct for finding the Aurora which meant we were chasing it whenever the skies were clear. This resulted in a truly epic night at Vik beach where we captured the lights in all their glory. The cherry on the top of a truly memorable trip!

My trip to Senja with Chasing Light Tours was fantastic, the locations were great and the guiding first class. A real shout out goes to the choice of accommodation - comfortable and convenient with photo locations right on our doorstep! Adding to this a year later, having done a second trip with Tyler to the Lofoten Islands. A fantastic week which was well organised at every stage. He has a detailed knowledge of the classic locations to photograph, as well as small out of the way places that give you something different!

What you’ll learn

Learning with me on this photography tour is a personalised and flexible experience. I encourage you to ask as many questions as you like; this is your opportunity to get the most out of our time together. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine advanced techniques, I’ll guide you through skills like bracketing for dynamic range, long exposures to capture movement, and refining your compositions, all explained in a way that suits your level. I’ll review your work in the field, provide constructive feedback, and share tips to improve your skills, from perfecting focus to using filters effectively. Most importantly, I want to inspire you to embrace your creativity and develop your own unique style, so you leave with not just great photos but work that truly feels like your own.

Here are a few of the key skills I can cover:

Camera Settings: Start with the basics—RAW, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. Learn how and when to use various modes on your camera to achieve the shot you want.

Composition: Discover the importance of composition in landscape photography. I’ll share what I look for when composing a compelling photograph.

Long Exposures: Learn how to create dramatic and interesting photographs using long exposure techniques.

Histogram: Master the art of reading histograms to expose correctly and capture maximum data without clipping.

Low Light: Explore techniques for photographing the night sky, including the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) if luck is on our side.

Bracketing Multiple Exposures: Learn how to capture multiple exposures for high dynamic range (HDR) scenes, ensuring no details are lost in highlights or shadows.

Editing: In the event of bad weather, I’ll demonstrate how I edit my photographs using Adobe Lightroom Classic with final touches in Photoshop.

FAQs

My FAQ section is designed to provide you with all the essential information you need about my Faroe Islands Photography Tour.

Atlantic Airways is the Faroe Islands national airline. They have flights from Edinburgh every Monday & Thursday. Keflavik: Mondays and Fridays. Daily flights from Copenhagen.

No, my photography tours and workshops cater to all skill levels. I will provide personalised instruction to help you improve your photography skills, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced photographer.

I recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, various lenses (wide-angle, telephoto), a sturdy tripod, extra batteries, memory cards, weather-appropriate clothing, and comfortable walking shoes. A full packing list which includes recommended camera gear and clothing for winter in Norway will be emailed to you after you book.

The meeting point will either be at the airport in Edinburgh if you’re on the same flight as me, or in the entrance hall at Vagar (FAE) airport at 5pm.

The trip will end after a sunrise shoot on the 17th April with dropoffs to the airport at 11am.

I’ve booked a 5 bedroom beachfront house located in the charming village of Sørvágur, just 0.9 miles from the airport. Set at the end of a stunning fjord, this accommodation provides the perfect sanctuary to unwind after your daily photography adventures.

No, all tours are self-catering.

There isn’t a great choice of restaurants on the island, or they’re closed during off season.  We will go to supermarket everyday or every other day to gather what’s necessary for the coming days.  Supermarkets are closed on Sundays. Every day I advise to bring lunch and snacks to eat throughout the day.

This tour involves moderate physical activity suitable for more fitness levels. Many locations are within a 15 – 20 minute walk from the car but there are locations that require hiking of up to 2 or 3 hours to get there. You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and icy ground.

I would recommended to budget at least £30-£50 per day. Everywhere accepts cards, so cash is not necessary.

You need to check your carrier. If coming from the UK I advise you to turn off your mobile data before boarding the plane. I also highly recommend getting an e-sim purely for mobile data. I did this last year and it was such an easy process.
