Itinerary
From my experience of running over 50 photography tours (at this stage I’ve lost count), I’ve found that having a rigid daily itinerary limits your chances of capturing the best possible images. Although we have a daily plan of areas we need to be in, I will work with the weather as much as I can and visit locations based on current conditions.
Each evening, I will “plan” the next day and let everyone know what time we’ll be leaving the following morning. This ensures that I’m putting you in the right place at the right time.
Here’s an overview of our planned Isle of Skye Photography Tour & Workshop:
Day 1 – Arrival Day
- Meet in Portree Town Centre at midday: We’ll gather in the town square of Portree, then head to our accommodation, about 10 minutes outside the town. We can stop at the supermarket on the way to grab a few essentials.
- Orientation and Overview: Once you’re settled in, we’ll have a quick chat to go over the schedule and discuss the workshop’s flexible approach.
- Sunset Session: After everyone is ready, we’ll set out to our first location to capture the stunning sunset, marking the beginning of our photography journey.
Days 2-4 – Photography Adventures
- Early Morning Start: Each day kicks off before sunrise to capture the captivating early light of Skye.
- Dynamic Schedule: We’ll adapt each day based on the latest weather forecast to ensure optimal conditions. Every location is chosen to provide varied landscapes, creative challenges, and photography opportunities.
- Full-Day Shooting: From sunrise to sunset, we’ll explore multiple locations across Skye, capturing its diverse scenery.
- Sunset Preparation: For each sunset, we’ll arrive at the selected location about two hours in advance, giving you time to scout, plan your composition, and prepare for the best shot.
Day 5 – Departure Day
- Final Morning Shoot: We’ll have one last early morning session, aiming to capture Skye’s beauty in the soft morning light.
- Wrap-Up and Farewell: Around lunchtime, our workshop will conclude, allowing you ample time for reflection and farewells before traveling home.
This itinerary ensures an immersive, flexible, and rewarding photography experience on the Isle of Skye.

THE REVIEWS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES
Just back from a fabulous workshop in Lofoten with Tyler. First off - Lofoten is a landscape photographer’s paradise with a multitude of stunning locations all within easy reach. This means more time photographing and less time driving between photo stops. Bear in mind that the weather is volatile. and can be absolutely wild. This means potentially days lost (as we found out) but can also give some incredible shooting conditions as the storms clear. Tyler is a superb photographer (check out his images if you haven't done so) and he knows the locations intimately. He is knowledgable and willing to provide as much guidance as you need or to leave you alone to do your own thing if that's what you prefer. He is also very skilled in using Lightroom/Photoshop and gave us a tutorial one evening which was incredibly useful. The upshot is that you are bound to come back with lots of memorable and stunning images. Oh, and Tyler has a great instinct for finding the Aurora which meant we were chasing it whenever the skies were clear. This resulted in a truly epic night at Vik beach where we captured the lights in all their glory. The cherry on the top of a truly memorable trip!
My trip to Senja with Chasing Light Tours was fantastic, the locations were great and the guiding first class. A real shout out goes to the choice of accommodation - comfortable and convenient with photo locations right on our doorstep! Adding to this a year later, having done a second trip with Tyler to the Lofoten Islands. A fantastic week which was well organised at every stage. He has a detailed knowledge of the classic locations to photograph, as well as small out of the way places that give you something different!
Tyler is an awesome guide. We spent a week in Lofoten, Norway running around the peninsula searching for auroras and compositions, and found plenty of both! Tyler has visited the peninsula many times and knows exactly where to go, what time of day to go, and what to do when the weather doesn’t cooperate. I’m a lifelong solo traveller and this was the second ever workshop/group tour I’ve been on. I’m still not used to travelling and photographing in groups, but Tyler always found a way to smooth things out and accommodate everyone’s wishes. The itinerary was very well-structured, with tons of time to explore, photograph, and appreciate the stunning scenery. We were also always given extra time for “just one more photo” when we asked for it. We were only ever rushed when absolutely necessary, and each time the hurry was worth it as it meant getting to a different location with an even better view or better lighting conditions. We had some issues with the electricity in our lodging, something that was completely out of Tyler’s control, but the issue was handled and resolved immediately by Tyler.
Tyler's passion not only for photography, but for helping people hone their skills, made this a trip of a lifetime. Our group had a range of experience and equipment and Tyler met each of us where we were and helped create amazing photos and great memories. We saw an erupting volcano, multiple nights of the aurora, glaciers, mountains, waterfalls, reindeer and ponies, basalt formations, black sand beaches and more. There was a never-ending supply of subjects and shooting conditions. Tyler plans his trips meticiously yet still allowed us to pivot when unplanned events occurred (like an erupting volcano!). He gave us free range to explore, yet kept our safety paramount. Finally, Tyler's knowledge of Iceland took us to places off the beaten path and even when we were at more touristy spots, he timed it so that we were gone as the big tour buses arrived. I highly recommend Tyler and Chasing Light Tours for your next photographic adventure!
What you’ll learn
Learning with me on this photography tour is a personalised and flexible experience. I encourage you to ask as many questions as you like; this is your opportunity to get the most out of our time together. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine advanced techniques, I’ll guide you through skills like bracketing for dynamic range, long exposures to capture movement, and refining your compositions, all explained in a way that suits your level. I’ll review your work in the field, provide constructive feedback, and share tips to improve your skills, from perfecting focus to using filters effectively. Most importantly, I want to inspire you to embrace your creativity and develop your own unique style, so you leave with not just great photos but work that truly feels like your own.
Here are a few of the key skills I can cover:
Camera Settings: Start with the basics—RAW, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. Learn how and when to use various modes on your camera to achieve the shot you want.
Composition: Discover the importance of composition in landscape photography. I’ll share what I look for when composing a compelling photograph.
Long Exposures: Learn how to create dramatic and interesting photographs using long exposure techniques.
Histogram: Master the art of reading histograms to expose correctly and capture maximum data without clipping.
Low Light: Explore techniques for photographing the night sky, including the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) if luck is on our side.
Bracketing Multiple Exposures: Learn how to capture multiple exposures for high dynamic range (HDR) scenes, ensuring no details are lost in highlights or shadows.
Editing: In the event of bad weather, I’ll demonstrate how I edit my photographs using Adobe Lightroom Classic with final touches in Photoshop.
Good to Know
Accommodation: Each participant will have their own double room with bathroom.
Airport Transportation: If traveling to Scotland by air and heading to the Isle of Skye, direct bus services operated by Citylink are available from Glasgow and Inverness, taking you straight to Portree Square on the Isle of Skye. There is also the option of travelling to Skye with me on the 20th March as well from Glasgow.
Self Catering / Meals: We will go to supermarket every other day to gather what’s necessary for the coming days. Every day I advise to bring lunch and snacks to eat throughout the day.
Hiking: Many of the locations are no more than 10 minutes from the car, a few locations do require hiking. You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and slippery ground.
Spending Money: On my last trip, I managed to spend approximately £20/£25 per day. Everywhere takes card, cash isn’t needed.
