Lofoten Photography Tours

Join me on a Lofoten Photography Tour, 95 miles north of the Arctic Circle. The Lofoten archipelago is a remote and rugged region that offers some of the most incredible photographic opportunities in the world. From the Northern Lights to the dramatic mountains, open seas, and sheltered bays, Lofoten is an absolute dream for photographers.

During the winter months, the low-lying sun can cast beautiful golden light all day long, creating the perfect conditions for photography. And each evening we’ll be chasing and doing Northern Lights photography for some truly spectacular shots.

My Lofoten Photography Tours are carefully designed with photographers in mind, offering a true taste of Lofoten. From wild Arctic beaches and traditional fishing villages to the iconic red and yellow rorbuer, every location is thoughtfully chosen to inspire creativity. I will spend plenty of one-on-one time with each participant, providing guidance and instruction on topics such as histograms and bracketing, all explained without technical jargon.

From the moment you arrive at the airport, I will take care of everything; transport, accommodation, guiding, and all tuition. All on-island transport is handled by a registered local driver/guide operating in full compliance with current Norwegian legislation, so you can focus entirely on your photography. The only things you need to arrange are your flights to Lofoten and your food. Join me for an unforgettable photography adventure in this beautiful and remote region.

Schedule

I have now lead well over 80 photography tours and workshops since 2017, and based on my experience, sticking to a fixed daily itinerary can significantly limit your chances of capturing the best possible images.

Instead, I prefer to work with the current weather conditions, choosing our locations based on the most favorable forecasted conditions. Each evening, I will carefully plan the next day’s itinerary and communicate the departure time for the morning. This approach ensures that we position ourselves in the right place at the right time to maximise our photography opportunities.

The tour will start and end from Leknes (LKN) in Norway, times will be confirmed.

Day 1 – Arrival Day

On day 1 of the Lofoten Photography tour I’ll be collecting everyone from either their accommodation in Leknes or the airport from 10am. We’ll be jumping straight into it by going for our first sunrise shoot. Afterwards, we’ll go to our accommodation get settled in then you can go across the street to the supermarket to get some supplies, followed by a sunset shoot. After 7pm we will then be heading out on our first aurora chase.

Day 2 to 6 – The Adventure

This is where the real adventure begins.

Over the next 6 days, we will be photographing at every opportunity. We will get up early every morning to be on location 1 hour before sunrise, and after each sunrise shoot, we will have breakfast before heading to the next location. For sunset shoots, we will arrive at the location roughly 2 hours before to scope out the best compositions.

We will be exploring the islands of Moskenesøya, Flakstadøya, Vestvågøy, Austvågøya and Gimsøysand.

Day 7 – Departure Day

On the final day, we still have a full days shooting. The tour finishes at roughly 3pm. I’ll be dropping everyone either to their accommodation Leknes if they’re staying an extra night or to the airport. I never say goodbye, as goodbyes are forever, I will say “see you later” as I hope you will join me on another photography adventure in the near future.

Don’t just take my word for it…

THE REVIEWS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

I recently returned from a photography trip to Lofoten, Norway with Chasing Light Tours Ltd., and it genuinely exceeded all my expectations. Every moment was fantastic from start to finish. Tyler was an exceptional guide — knowledgeable, calm, and always focused on keeping the group safe while getting us to the very best locations. He was also great craic, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Tyler, my fellow companions, the small group size and of course the location were key to the success of this tour. It created a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and allowed everyone to get the most out of each location without feeling rushed. The locations were simply mind‑blowing: Flakstad Beach, Haukland Beach, Uttakleiv Beach, Reine, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Nusfjord, and of course Ramberg. Each stop felt carefully chosen, and the variety of landscapes and other elements to photograph was both stunning and varied. The photography guidance was top‑class. Tyler’s tips on aurora settings were especially helpful, and I could see my shots improve noticeably over the week. I also really appreciated the advice on expanding creativity, which pushed me to try new approaches and think differently about composition. Accommodation was another highlight — staying in a 150+ year‑old traditional Norwegian house was a real treat and added so much character to the overall experience. I couldn’t recommend Chasing Light Tours highly enough. If you’re looking for a well‑run, inspiring photography tour with expert guidance, stunning locations, and a great group atmosphere, this is it. If you are thinking about it, don't hesistate, life is too short, just go ahead and do it!

Just back from a fabulous workshop in Lofoten with Tyler. First off - Lofoten is a landscape photographer’s paradise with a multitude of stunning locations all within easy reach. This means more time photographing and less time driving between photo stops. Bear in mind that the weather is volatile. and can be absolutely wild. This means potentially days lost (as we found out) but can also give some incredible shooting conditions as the storms clear. Tyler is a superb photographer (check out his images if you haven't done so) and he knows the locations intimately. He is knowledgable and willing to provide as much guidance as you need or to leave you alone to do your own thing if that's what you prefer. He is also very skilled in using Lightroom/Photoshop and gave us a tutorial one evening which was incredibly useful. The upshot is that you are bound to come back with lots of memorable and stunning images. Oh, and Tyler has a great instinct for finding the Aurora which meant we were chasing it whenever the skies were clear. This resulted in a truly epic night at Vik beach where we captured the lights in all their glory. The cherry on the top of a truly memorable trip!

My trip to Senja with Chasing Light Tours was fantastic, the locations were great and the guiding first class. A real shout out goes to the choice of accommodation - comfortable and convenient with photo locations right on our doorstep! Adding to this a year later, having done a second trip with Tyler to the Lofoten Islands. A fantastic week which was well organised at every stage. He has a detailed knowledge of the classic locations to photograph, as well as small out of the way places that give you something different!

Highly Recommend Chasing Lights Tours. Just recently home from 7 Nights in Lofoten Islands, Norway and it was absolutely incredible. Tylers knowledge of the area and skies allowed us to capture the Northern Lights on more than several occasion's throughout the course. Accommodation was perfect for the trip, A home from home with a supermarket and coffee shop right on our doorstep. Tylers enthusiasm for photography and the love of the outdoors was very refreshing and infectious, As a commercial photographer by traded I went into this course looking to learn as much as I could and Tylers wealth of knowledge and patients allowed me to learn so much in such a sort period of time. I would like to thank Tyler again and I look forward to going on another course very soon.

What you’ll learn

Learning with me is relaxed and personal. There’s no set curriculum, no pressure. You grow at your own pace, ask whatever you want, and I work around where you are, not where I think you should be.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to push your creative boundaries further, I’ll guide you through techniques that suit your level. That might mean learning how to bracket exposures for tricky light, using long exposures to create drama and mood, or refining the way you see and shoot a scene. I’ll review your images in the field, offer practical, constructive feedback, and share tips along the way, from nailing your focus to getting the most out of your filters.

Most importantly, I want to help you feel confident in your photography and inspired to develop your own style. The goal isn’t just to come home with great photos, but to come away feeling like those images truly belong to you.

Here are a few of the key skills I can cover:

Camera Settings

RAW, using Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO effectively, and help you understand the different modes on your camera so you feel in control of every shot.

Composition

Composition is everything in landscape photography. I’ll show you what I look for when framing an image and help you develop your eye for strong, thoughtful compositions.

Long Exposures

If the conditions are right, we’ll experiment with long exposures to create striking, atmospheric images from smoothing out water to capturing cloud movement.

Histogram

I’ll show you how to actually read your histogram and use it as your exposure guide. Get this right and you’ll stop second-guessing your exposures in the field.

Low Light

We’ll cover how to handle low-light conditions, from golden hour right through to shooting in the dark. Night sky photography, star trails, long exposures after sunset.

Editing

I’ll walk you through my Lightroom workflow and show you how I take a raw file from capture to finished image. Photoshop for the trickier stuff if needed.

You’ll have full support throughout, but I’ll never be over your shoulder unless you want me to be. My job is to help you feel confident and creative, and to get out of your way when you don’t need me.

FAQs

My FAQ section is designed to provide you with all the essential information you need about my Lofoten Photography Tour.

Travel & Logistics

Yes. Transportation during the workshop is provided by a licensed local driver and guide and is included as part of the overall tour experience. Due to Norwegian regulations, transport is operated by a locally based professional who holds the required licences and insurance to operate safely and legally in winter conditions. This ensures that all travel during the tour is compliant with local laws and allows you to focus fully on photography without needing to worry about driving in challenging Arctic conditions.

Airport transfers are only included if you arrive at Leknes Airport on the morning the tour begins.

If you arrive earlier (for example the day before), you will need to take a short taxi ride from Leknes Airport to your accommodation in Leknes. The drive only takes a few minutes. You can arrange a taxi in advance by contacting the local taxi company, or call +47 22 38 83 09 when you arrive.

The tour starts at 10:00am on the date of chosen tour. I will begin collecting everyone from their hotel in Leknes or the airport. We will stay in constant contact via the WhatsApp group leading up to the arrival day.

The trip will end roughly at 15:00 on the last day of your chosen tour. I can either drop you back to accommodation in Leknes or to the airport for the 18:20 flight back to Bodø.

Generally to get to Leknes you will take 3 flights. From your home country to Oslo and then catch another flight to Bodø and a final flight from Bodø to Leknes. Leknes airport has 7 flights daily from Bodø. You can overnight in Bodø before the tour and arrive on the 7:05am flight, or fly in the night before. If you fly in the night before, you will need to book a taxi to your accommodation. When you arrive, you can call this number: +47 22 38 83 09.

Accommodation

We will stay in a 150 year old, 5 bedroom self-catering house in the centre of Ramberg. The house has everything needed for cooking, storing food, and post-processing sessions. Towels and a hairdryer are provided, and there are 5 twin bedrooms.

Accommodation is in a traditional 150 year old five-bedroom self-catering house in Ramberg. The tour is limited to six participants plus me, which means two rooms will be shared by two guests, while the remaining rooms are single occupancy. Rooms are allocated on a first-come basis where possible, and I always aim to ensure everyone is comfortable throughout the stay.

No, all tours are self-catering. We will visit the supermarket on the day of arrival to gather supplies and bring packed lunches each day. There will be opportunities to visit cafes and restaurants if time permits, but we will mostly be eating on the go.

Tour Experience

This tour is limited to a maximum of six photographers. Keeping the group small ensures everyone has plenty of space at each location and enough time for individual guidance. It also allows us to move more easily between locations and adapt to changing weather and light, which is particularly important when photographing landscapes and the Northern Lights in Lofoten.

The tour is moderately active. Many locations are only a short walk from the vehicle, typically around 10–15 minutes. However, winter conditions can mean uneven, icy, or slippery ground. You should be comfortable walking on rough terrain while carrying your camera gear and standing outside in cold temperatures for extended periods.

While my photography tours cater to all skill levels, having a basic understanding of photography will enhance your experience. It’s helpful to be familiar with concepts like the exposure triangle, histograms, and terms such as exposure bracketing, exposure compensation, and focus bracketing. If you’re new to these ideas, I recommend reading this blog post for essential tips to prepare for a photography tour.

Being comfortable with your camera is just as important as understanding photography concepts. The more familiar you are with adjusting settings quickly, the better equipped you’ll be to capture great shots in dynamic environments. On the other hand, if you’re still learning to navigate your camera’s settings, you may find yourself missing key moments while making adjustments.

During the tour, I’ll provide personalised instruction to help you improve, whether you’re just starting out or are already an experienced photographer.

Preparation

Winter in Lofoten can be cold, windy, and changeable. Layering is essential. A warm insulated jacket, thermal base layers, waterproof outer layers, insulated gloves, a hat, and sturdy waterproof boots are strongly recommended. After booking, you will receive a detailed packing list covering clothing, camera gear, and other essentials to help you prepare for the conditions.

I recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, various lenses (wide-angle, telephoto), a sturdy tripod, extra batteries, memory cards, weather-appropriate clothing, and comfortable walking shoes. A full packing list which includes recommended camera gear and clothing for winter in Norway will be emailed to you after you book.

Yes you can, but there are important regulations to follow. Before operating your drone, you must register it and pass the required certification at flydrone.no. Additionally, drones weighing over 250 grams must comply with stricter rules, including maintaining a safe distance from people and avoiding flights over crowds. Ensure you have appropriate insurance and are confident in flying responsibly. For more detailed information about drone regulations and best practices in Norway, visit the Drone Guide for Lofoten.

Conditions

No. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed. They depend on both solar activity and clear skies. However, Lofoten is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora during winter, and whenever conditions look promising we will head out to try and photograph them.

Weather in Lofoten can change quickly, especially in winter. Rather than following a fixed itinerary, the daily plan is based on the latest weather forecasts and conditions. Each evening I review the forecasts and choose locations that offer the best photographic opportunities for the following day. This flexible approach gives us the strongest chance of working with good light and interesting conditions throughout the tour.

Booking

To secure your place, a deposit is required at the time of booking. Once your deposit is received, your place on the tour is confirmed. The remaining balance is due closer to the tour start date. Full payment details and timelines will be provided during the booking process.

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and should cover trip cancellation, medical expenses, and protection for your photography equipment. Winter travel in Arctic environments can be unpredictable, so having suitable insurance ensures you are protected if unexpected issues arise before or during the trip.

I recommend arranging your travel insurance as soon as you book your place on the tour, so you are covered in case anything unexpected happens before the trip
