The Plan

Between myself and Darren, we bring over 200 tours’ worth of expertise. Our flexible itinerary maximizes your chances of capturing the best images, with adjustments made daily to account for weather and light. Each morning, we’ll arrive on location about an hour before sunrise, and each evening, we’ll stay until about an hour after sunset.

Here’s an overview of our planned Morocco Photography Tour & Workshop:

Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech – Transfer to Essaouira

Today your Morocco Photography Tour begins! After meeting in Marrakech, we’ll set out on a 2.5-hour drive to the coastal town of Essaouira. As we travel, watch the landscape unfold, offering a dynamic introduction to the country’s natural beauty. Upon arrival, you’ll have time to wander the charming seaside medina at your own pace.

Photography Highlights: Scenic drive, coastal sunset, Ancient medina architecture, bustling harbour scene, Vibrant fishing boats and a dramatic Atlantic sunset.

Day 2 – Full Day in Essaouira

Devote the entire day to capturing Essaouira’s unique visual tapestry. Its signature blue-and-white buildings, narrow alleyways, and lively souks make it a delightful setting for street and architectural photography. The coastal light and gentle breeze create an inviting atmosphere for artistic exploration.

Photography Highlights: Historic medina, bustling fish market, Atlantic coastline.

Day 3 – Journey to Ait Benhaddou

Bid farewell to the coast as we head inland on a 6.5-hour drive to Ait Benhaddou. En route, enjoy a lunch break and take in the changing landscapes—from rugged mountains to fertile valleys. Upon arrival in the late afternoon, capture the kasbah’s timeless silhouette in warm, golden light.

Photography Highlights: UNESCO site, ancient kasbahs, evening light.

Day 4 – Immersion in Ait Benhaddou

Spend the morning photographing the kasbah’s intricate details and meeting local families, who will offer a glimpse into authentic Moroccan life. After a leisurely lunch, enjoy downtime to rest or explore independently. In the evening, return to the kasbah for a sunset session that reveals its architectural splendor in soft, fading light. After lunch we’ll travel to Dades Valley and the rock formations there. Your hotel has a view to the mountains.

Photography Highlights: Local portraits, authentic family interactions, rock formations.

Day 5 –  Nomad Visit & Elkhorbat Ksar

After breakfast we’ll take a circular mountain route of roughly 3 hours, covering Grand Canyon views and nomad camps for portraits and documentary scenes. In the afternoon we’ll arrive at Elkhorbat Ksar, our home for the night, where we’ll discover a quieter side of history and tradition.

Photography Highlights: Lively market scenes brimming with color and activity, Historic alleys and mud-brick architecture of Elkhorbat Ksar.

Day 6 – Exploring Elkhorbat Ksar

Spend a full day immersed in the textures and stories of this ancient fortified settlement. Its time-worn adobe structures and narrow passageways tell the tales of centuries past. Relax in the afternoon before an evening shoot to capture the shifting light and shadows.

Photography Highlights: The distinctive mud-brick forms and earthy tones of the Ksar, Depictions of daily life woven seamlessly into the historic setting.

Day 7 – Rissani Market & Into the Desert – Astrophotography

A 2.5-hour drive takes us deeper into Morocco’s desert landscapes and arrival in Rissani to photograph its vibrant market—an authentic slice of everyday Moroccan life. After lunch, a short drive takes us to our hotel next to the dunes, where we can arrange for sunset camel images and prepare for a star-filled sky, ideal conditions for astrophotography.

Photography Highlights: Desert landscapes, camel and sunset in the dunes, astrophotography.

Day 8 –  Skoura

The next morning we drive back to Rissini’s outskirts photographing desert scenes and architecture before taking our 4.5 hour journey to Skoura where we can relax and review our images.

Photography Highlights: Rissini’s ancient settlements and Ksars, Moulay Ali Cherif Zaouia

Day 9 – Return to Marrakech

Tyler put on a great North West Ireland tour. I learned a lot and got a ton of great photos. I will definitely be signing up for another workshop in the future!

Just got back from the tour of Northern Ireland and Donegal. It was a great, small-group experience. Tyler was very knowledgeable, and took us to many beautiful spots from sunset to sunrise, and offered helpful photography suggestions. I would definitely take a tour with him again.

I throughly enjoyed my tour of North and West Ireland with Chasing Light Photo Tours Tyler's knowledge and history of the area is something you just do not get on the average photo tour. His guidance and selection of photo locations was just so unique. We not only visited known landscape locations but also some locations that I had not known about, which were equally as stunning as known locations. He is also very attentive with the group and safety. In addition, his good-naturedness and humor just add a unique and very enjoyable trip. There were 6 photographers including Tyler and we all got along fantastically. I highly recommend Chasing Light Photo Tours and look forward to another adventure with them. Michael

What you’ll learn

A Morocco Photography Tour is a different kind of photography challenge. You’re not waiting for a wave to break or a cloud to roll in. You’re navigating busy souks, building trust with strangers, reading light that changes fast, and making considered decisions about when and how to raise a camera. Between myself and Darren, we’ve got you covered at every step.

Street & Documentary Photography Working in a busy medina or market is as much about people skills as it is about camera settings. We’ll show you how to move through a scene with confidence, read situations quickly, and capture genuine moments without feeling intrusive or making people uncomfortable.

Portrait Photography Some of the most powerful images you’ll bring home will be portraits. We’ll work with local families and communities throughout the tour, and we’ll guide you through how to approach people respectfully, communicate without a shared language, and create portraits that feel real rather than posed.

Working in Strong Light Morocco in October still throws harsh overhead sun at you for a good part of the day. Rather than retreating until golden hour, we’ll show you how to use shade, contrast, and texture creatively and find images in conditions most photographers write off.

Astrophotography in the Sahara The desert sky on a clear night is genuinely something else. We’ll cover everything you need, settings, planning, composition, and focus, to make the most of one of the best night sky locations on the planet.

Long Exposures & Light Trails In Dades Valley we’ll work with the famous zig-zag roads to create long exposure light trail images against the mountain backdrop.

Editing & Post Processing If the weather ever forces us off location, we’ll use the time well. I’ll walk you through my Lightroom Classic workflow from import to export, with finishing touches in Photoshop where needed. You’ll also have access to a post-processing webinar after you’re home, so you can revisit everything at your own pace.

Throughout the tour, the support is there whenever you want it. There’s no pressure, no one-size-fits-all approach, and we’ll never be over your shoulder unless you want us to be. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to push your work further, we’ll work at your pace.

Good to Know

Packing List – A full packing list will be emailed after booking.

Accommodation: On our Morocco Photography Tours, accommodation has been carefully chosen to complement the experience at every stop. You’ll stay in a mix of riads, auberges, and casas, with one night in a hotel right on the edge of the Sahara dunes. Each place offers comfort and privacy, giving you the perfect space to rest, review your shots, and soak in the surroundings at the end of each day.

Flights – Fly to Marrakech (RAK). I will fly into Morocco a few days before the tour begins. I try and work with everyone in terms of their flights. All I ask is if you’re flying in on the day the tour start, just ensure your flight arrives no later than midday, if you can’t get a flight before midday, then I advise you to fly in a day or 2 earlier.

Meeting Point: We will meet at midday outside the terminal at Marrakech (RAK). We will also be in constant contact with you on the days leading up to arrival day. After we’ve picked everyone up, we’ll be heading straight towards our accommodation with a stop at the supermarket to pick up some supplies for the days ahead.

Ending Point: Dropoffs at the airport will be outside the terminal at Marrakech (RAK) after 5:30pm on the 22nd October.

Self Catering – All my tours are self-catering at their core. We stock up at the supermarket on arrival day for snacks, packed lunches, and bits for the road, so we can stay on location as long as the light demands without watching the clock. That said, we’ll also eat out at local restaurants and cafés along the way. Morocco has incredible food and it would be a shame to miss it entirely. But when there’s a shot to be had, that always comes first.

Spending Money – Morocco is generally very affordable day to day. Most places take card, but it’s also worth bringing cash for smaller shops and market stalls.

UK Mobile Network – If coming from the UK, your data roaming will work and come out of your data back home.
