Tyler Collins
PHOTOGRAPHER AND AURORA GUIDE
I’m from Northern Ireland. I grew up here, I know the roads, and I’ve been photographing this island for years. That matters, because Ireland’s best light is often at places most people don’t know exist, and timing it right means knowing the land, not just the coordinates.

However, I always adapt to the conditions to ensure you have the best opportunities for incredible photographs. Weather plays a significant role in shaping each day’s itinerary, so the locations we visit may vary from tour to tour. This is only a sample of the places we can visit—I know many incredible locations, and I may even take you to places not listed here if I know they’ll offer the best light, atmosphere, or unique shots on the day. The goal is to make sure you go home with a stunning collection of images, no matter what the Irish weather throws at us.

I recently returned from a photography trip to Lofoten, Norway with Chasing Light Tours Ltd., and it genuinely exceeded all my expectations. Every moment was fantastic from start to finish. Tyler was an exceptional guide — knowledgeable, calm, and always focused on keeping the group safe while getting us to the very best locations. He was also great craic, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Tyler, my fellow companions, the small group size and of course the location were key to the success of this tour. It created a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and allowed everyone to get the most out of each location without feeling rushed. The locations were simply mind‑blowing: Flakstad Beach, Haukland Beach, Uttakleiv Beach, Reine, Hamnøy, Sakrisøy, Nusfjord, and of course Ramberg. Each stop felt carefully chosen, and the variety of landscapes and other elements to photograph was both stunning and varied. The photography guidance was top‑class. Tyler’s tips on aurora settings were especially helpful, and I could see my shots improve noticeably over the week. I also really appreciated the advice on expanding creativity, which pushed me to try new approaches and think differently about composition. Accommodation was another highlight — staying in a 150+ year‑old traditional Norwegian house was a real treat and added so much character to the overall experience. I couldn’t recommend Chasing Light Tours highly enough. If you’re looking for a well‑run, inspiring photography tour with expert guidance, stunning locations, and a great group atmosphere, this is it. If you are thinking about it, don't hesistate, life is too short, just go ahead and do it!

Just back from a fabulous workshop in Lofoten with Tyler. First off - Lofoten is a landscape photographer’s paradise with a multitude of stunning locations all within easy reach. This means more time photographing and less time driving between photo stops. Bear in mind that the weather is volatile. and can be absolutely wild. This means potentially days lost (as we found out) but can also give some incredible shooting conditions as the storms clear. Tyler is a superb photographer (check out his images if you haven't done so) and he knows the locations intimately. He is knowledgable and willing to provide as much guidance as you need or to leave you alone to do your own thing if that's what you prefer. He is also very skilled in using Lightroom/Photoshop and gave us a tutorial one evening which was incredibly useful. The upshot is that you are bound to come back with lots of memorable and stunning images. Oh, and Tyler has a great instinct for finding the Aurora which meant we were chasing it whenever the skies were clear. This resulted in a truly epic night at Vik beach where we captured the lights in all their glory. The cherry on the top of a truly memorable trip!

My trip to Senja with Chasing Light Tours was fantastic, the locations were great and the guiding first class. A real shout out goes to the choice of accommodation - comfortable and convenient with photo locations right on our doorstep! Adding to this a year later, having done a second trip with Tyler to the Lofoten Islands. A fantastic week which was well organised at every stage. He has a detailed knowledge of the classic locations to photograph, as well as small out of the way places that give you something different!

Highly Recommend Chasing Lights Tours. Just recently home from 7 Nights in Lofoten Islands, Norway and it was absolutely incredible. Tylers knowledge of the area and skies allowed us to capture the Northern Lights on more than several occasion's throughout the course. Accommodation was perfect for the trip, A home from home with a supermarket and coffee shop right on our doorstep. Tylers enthusiasm for photography and the love of the outdoors was very refreshing and infectious, As a commercial photographer by traded I went into this course looking to learn as much as I could and Tylers wealth of knowledge and patients allowed me to learn so much in such a sort period of time. I would like to thank Tyler again and I look forward to going on another course very soon.

Itinerary

Sunset, Giants Causeway, Northern Ireland

While I always strive to make the most of the best possible conditions, for this tour, we will be based at three different accommodations, meaning we’ll have a set structure in place for certain locations. However, I will still take a flexible approach within those areas, choosing specific sites based on the most favorable forecasted conditions. Each evening, I will review the next day’s plan and communicate the schedule, ensuring we capture the best light and compositions possible during our stay at each base.

Day 1 – Arrival Day

The tour begins with pick-ups from Dublin Airport (DUB) between 10am and midday. If you’re flying in the day before, there’s a hotel right beside the airport where I can collect you from. After gathering the group, we’ll transfer to our first base on the Causeway Coast, where you’ll check in and settle before we head out for a welcome briefing and dinner.

As the sun lowers, we’ll take in the evening light at Mussenden Temple and Downhill Beach, a perfect introduction to the stunning coastline we’ll explore over the next few days.

Overnight in Causeway Coast

Day 2 – The Causeway Coast

Our first full day is dedicated to exploring the Causeway Coast, an area renowned for its rugged seascapes and historic landmarks. We’ll start before sunrise, capturing first light at iconic locations such as Giant’s Causeway, Ballintoy Harbour, and Dunluce Castle.

The day is structured around a six-hour morning photography session, followed by midday downtime, where you can explore independently, edit photos, or simply rest. As golden hour approaches, we’ll head out for another six-hour evening session, making the most of the soft, changing light. If a morning looks like a washout, we’ll adjust, allowing for a later start and staying out until after sunset to maximise our shooting opportunities.

Overnight in Causeway Coast

Day 3 – Transfer to North Donegal

After our sunrise session along the Causeway Coast, we’ll transfer to North Donegal during our midday downtime. This journey takes us further west, where dramatic coastlines and unspoiled landscapes provide fresh photographic opportunities.

Once we arrive and check in at our new accommodation, you’ll have some free time before we head out for our evening shoot. Locations such as Fanad Lighthouse, Malin Head, and Great Pollet Sea Arch will provide incredible compositions in the soft evening light.

Overnight in North Donegal

Day 4 – North Donegal

A full day dedicated to North Donegal’s rugged beauty. We’ll continue with our structured approach—starting with a sunrise session, followed by midday downtime, and then an evening shoot focused on capturing golden hour and blue hour.

With a flexible approach, we’ll tailor our sessions to match the conditions, whether it’s golden light spilling across the Atlantic or stormy waves crashing against the headlands.

Overnight in North Donegal

Day 5 – Transfer to South Donegal

After our morning shoot in North Donegal, we’ll transfer to South Donegal during our midday downtime. This final base will offer some of the most dramatic landscapes of the trip.

Once settled into our accommodation, you’ll have some time to relax before we head out for an evening shoot at locations such as Slieve League, An Port, and Maghera Beach.

Overnight in South Donegal

Day 6 – South Donegal

For our final full day, we continue exploring South Donegal, a region known for its wild beauty and towering sea cliffs. This leg of the journey will take us to breathtaking locations such as Dunlewey Church, Sturral Ridge, and Sheskinmore.

With the same flexible structure in place, we’ll ensure each session is optimised for the best conditions, whether it’s sunrise over the dramatic cliffs or the last light of day fading into twilight. This will be our last opportunity for an evening shoot before we wrap up our adventure.

Overnight in South Donegal

Day 7 – Departure Day

On our final morning, we’ll have one last photography session at sunrise, making the most of our final moments in the stunning landscapes of North West Ireland. After our shoot, we’ll return to our accommodation for breakfast and check-out at approximately 11am.

Once checked out, we’ll begin the 3-4-hour transfer back to Dublin Airport (DUB), ensuring you arrive in good time for your onward journey. We will be back at the airport by 5pm at the latest.

Saying goodbye is never easy, so instead, I’ll say “see you later”—I hope this tour leaves you inspired and that we’ll share another adventure together in the future.

What you’ll learn

Learning with me is relaxed and personal. There’s no set curriculum, no pressure. You grow at your own pace, ask whatever you want, and I work around where you are, not where I think you should be.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to push your creative boundaries further, I’ll guide you through techniques that suit your level. That might mean learning how to bracket exposures for tricky light, using long exposures to create drama and mood, or refining the way you see and shoot a scene. I’ll review your images in the field, offer practical, constructive feedback, and share tips along the way, from nailing your focus to getting the most out of your filters.

Most importantly, I want to help you feel confident in your photography and inspired to develop your own style. The goal isn’t just to come home with great photos, but to come away feeling like those images truly belong to you.

Here are a few of the key skills I can cover:

Camera Settings

RAW, using Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO effectively, and help you understand the different modes on your camera so you feel in control of every shot.

Composition

Composition is everything in landscape photography. I’ll show you what I look for when framing an image and help you develop your eye for strong, thoughtful compositions.

Long Exposures

If the conditions are right, we’ll experiment with long exposures to create striking, atmospheric images from smoothing out water to capturing cloud movement.

Histogram

I’ll show you how to actually read your histogram and use it as your exposure guide. Get this right and you’ll stop second-guessing your exposures in the field.

Low Light

We’ll cover how to handle low-light conditions, from golden hour right through to shooting in the dark. Night sky photography, star trails, long exposures after sunset.

Editing

I’ll walk you through my Lightroom workflow and show you how I take a raw file from capture to finished image. Photoshop for the trickier stuff if needed.

You’ll have full support throughout, but I’ll never be over your shoulder unless you want me to be. My job is to help you feel confident and creative, and to get out of your way when you don’t need me.

Good to Know

UK ETA – Electronic Travel Authorisation: Because part of the tour is in Northern Ireland, you’ll need to apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if you’re from a country that requires a visa to enter the UK.

The ETA costs £16, takes just a few minutes to apply for, and is usually approved within a few hours. Still, I recommend applying at least 3 days before travel to be safe.

Check if you need one and apply here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/electronic-travel-authorisation-eta

Flights: You will fly to Dublin Airport (DUB). If you’re flying in on the day the tour starts, you need to ensure your flight arrives no later than midday. If you can’t get a flight before midday, then I advise you to fly in a day or 2 earlier.

Meeting Point: The meeting point for the workshop will be Dublin Airport (DUB) or accommodation in the surrounding area from 10am until midday. I recommend the Maldron Hotel Dublin Airport if you’re flying in a day early.

Accommodation: We’ll be staying in a selection of carefully chosen hotels and guesthouses along the Causeway Coast and in Donegal. Each property has been selected for its comfort, service, and location, giving us relaxing bases close to our photography spots.

Twin Share Rooms: Accommodation is based on twin share. If you’re travelling solo, you won’t pay anything extra, you’ll simply be paired with another guest of the same sex. Each room comes with comfortable separate beds and a private ensuite bathroom, so you’ll still have the space to unwind after a full day of shooting.

Single Supplement: If you prefer the privacy of your own room, a single supplement of £900 applies. As availability is limited, single rooms are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Packing List: A full packing list will be emailed to you after you complete your booking.

Hiking – Some of the locations require some short hiking of up to 30-60 minutes. (It’s worth it!) You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and slippery ground.

UK Mobile Network – If coming from the UK, your data roaming will work and come out of your data back home.

FAQs

My FAQ section is designed to provide you with all the essential information you need about my North West Ireland Photography Tour.

Yes, all transportation during the workshop is included in the price. Once you arrive at the meeting point Dublin Airport (DUB), all transfers between locations and daily transportation to photography sites are covered.

Yes, airport transfers are included at the start and end of the tour. Pick-up will be from Dublin Aiport (DUB) between 10am and midday on arrival day, and drop-off will be back at the airport by 5pm at the latest on departure day.

If you’re arriving the day before, I can collect you from a nearby hotel close to the airport. However, if your travel plans fall outside the designated pick-up/drop-off times, you will need to arrange your own transport to meet the group.

While my photography tours cater to all skill levels, having a basic understanding of photography will enhance your experience. It’s helpful to be familiar with concepts like the exposure triangle, histograms, and terms such as exposure bracketing, exposure compensation, and focus bracketing. If you’re new to these ideas, I recommend reading this blog post for essential tips to prepare for a photography tour.

Being comfortable with your camera is just as important as understanding photography concepts. The more familiar you are with adjusting settings quickly, the better equipped you’ll be to capture great shots in dynamic environments. On the other hand, if you’re still learning to navigate your camera’s settings, you may find yourself missing key moments while making adjustments.

During the tour, I’ll provide personalised instruction to help you improve, whether you’re just starting out or are already an experienced photographer.

I recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, various lenses (wide-angle, telephoto), a sturdy tripod, extra batteries, memory cards, weather-appropriate clothing, and comfortable walking shoes. A full packing list which includes recommended camera gear will be emailed to you after you book.

Yes, you can bring a drone on the Ireland Photography Tour. However, it’s essential to comply with the UK & Ireland’s drone regulations to ensure safe and legal operations.

The tour starts in Dublin, Ireland. Pick-up will be from Dublin Airport (DUB) between 10 am and midday on arrival day.

If you’re flying in the day before, I can collect you from a nearby hotel close to the airport. If you arrive outside the designated pick-up times, you’ll need to arrange your own transport to meet the group at our first base on the Causeway Coast.

The tour ends on the final day with a morning photography session followed by breakfast and check-out from our accommodation at approximately 11 am.

After check-out, we will begin the 3-4 hour transfer back to Dublin Airport (DUB), arriving by 5 pm at the latest. If you have a later flight or onward travel plans, you may need to arrange additional transport or accommodation as required.

Dublin Airport (DUB) has direct flights from multiple UK, Europe & International, including London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Amsterdam, and Paris.

Throughout the tour, we stay in a hand-picked selection of hotels and guesthouses chosen for their comfort, character, and location. Each property offers a welcoming atmosphere and provides the perfect place to relax after a day out with the camera, while also keeping us close to our photography locations.

Accommodation is based on twin share. If you’re travelling solo, you won’t be charged extra, you’ll be paired with another guest of the same sex. Each room features separate, comfortable beds and a private ensuite bathroom, ensuring you have the space and privacy to unwind at the end of each day.

Twin-share rooms mean you will share a room with another guest of the same sex, with separate beds. If you’re travelling with a friend or partner then you will share with them.

Yes. If you prefer the privacy of your own room, a single supplement of £900 applies. As availability is limited, single rooms are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Meals are not included, which gives us the flexibility to eat well and keep our schedule focused on the best light. On arrival, we’ll pick up essentials for packed lunches, and when time allows I’ll suggest favourite local cafés and restaurants for relaxed evening meals.

Some of the best vantage points do require a little effort to reach. Expect walks of never no more than 1 hour, depending on the location, and the terrain can vary. Some routes are uphill and rocky, others are flat paths through sand dunes, and some follow gravel tracks or sheep trails.

You don’t need to be an athlete, but if you struggle with mobility or longer walks, these tour might not be suitable. I’ll always give you a heads-up in advance of each shoot, and we’ll take our time getting there but being able to move confidently and safely across different terrain is an important part of the experience.

I would recommended to budget at least £30-£50 per day. Everywhere accepts cards, so cash is not necessary.

Yes, if you are coming from the UK, your data roaming will work and be charged to your data plan at home. If you’re coming from elsewhere, it might be worth getting an e-sim if your phone supports it.
