Itinerary
From my experience of running over 30 photography tours, I have found that a fixed daily itinerary can limit your chances of going home with the best possible images.
Instead, I work with the weather to visit locations based on the best forecasted conditions. Each evening, I will plan the next day’s itinerary and let everyone know what time we will be leaving in the morning. This ensures that I am putting you in the right place at the right time for the best possible photography opportunities.
The tour will start and end from Tromsø (TOS) airport in Norway.
Day 1 – Arrival Day
This is the first day of your Senja Photography Tour. You will fly to Tromsø (TOS) airport, where I will collect everyone at midday. Following a scenic route from Tromsø, we will soon arrive on the fairytale island of Senja. On our way to the accommodation, we will stop at a supermarket. We will also have our first photography session on this day, capturing the sunset. In the evening we’ll have our first Northern Lights Chase too!
Day 2 to 6 – The Adventure
This is where the real adventure begins.
Over the next 5 days, we will be photographing at every opportunity. We will get up early every morning to be on location at a minimum 1 hour before sunrise, and after each sunrise shoot we’ll head to the next location. For sunset shoots, we will arrive at the location roughly 2 hours before to allow your plenty of time to check out the immediate area and to scope out compositions.
Day 7 – Departure Day
On the final day, we’ll still have a full day of activities, beginning at sunrise and lasting until sunset. Following the day’s events, we’ll return to our accommodation to prepare for our ferry journey back to the mainland, en route to Tromsø. I anticipate arriving in Tromsø around 7 pm depending on which ferry we get. It’s advisable to arrange accommodation for this night, as flights typically depart early the next morning.
I’ll bid each of you farewell as I drop you off at your respective accommodations or to the airport, with hopes that we’ll reunite for another captivating photography expedition in the future.
Trip Highlights
Please Note: This is a suggested list of locations. Weather plays a significant role in shaping each day’s itinerary, so the locations we visit may vary from tour to tour. We could visit all of these or even more, depending on conditions and how much time we spend at certain places. Many of these locations offer diverse photo opportunities, giving you the freedom to explore and capture a variety of photographs.
Don’t just take my word for it…
THE REVIEWS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES
Just back from a fabulous workshop in Lofoten with Tyler. First off - Lofoten is a landscape photographer’s paradise with a multitude of stunning locations all within easy reach. This means more time photographing and less time driving between photo stops. Bear in mind that the weather is volatile. and can be absolutely wild. This means potentially days lost (as we found out) but can also give some incredible shooting conditions as the storms clear. Tyler is a superb photographer (check out his images if you haven't done so) and he knows the locations intimately. He is knowledgable and willing to provide as much guidance as you need or to leave you alone to do your own thing if that's what you prefer. He is also very skilled in using Lightroom/Photoshop and gave us a tutorial one evening which was incredibly useful. The upshot is that you are bound to come back with lots of memorable and stunning images. Oh, and Tyler has a great instinct for finding the Aurora which meant we were chasing it whenever the skies were clear. This resulted in a truly epic night at Vik beach where we captured the lights in all their glory. The cherry on the top of a truly memorable trip!
My trip to Senja with Chasing Light Tours was fantastic, the locations were great and the guiding first class. A real shout out goes to the choice of accommodation - comfortable and convenient with photo locations right on our doorstep! Adding to this a year later, having done a second trip with Tyler to the Lofoten Islands. A fantastic week which was well organised at every stage. He has a detailed knowledge of the classic locations to photograph, as well as small out of the way places that give you something different!
Highly Recommend Chasing Lights Tours. Just recently home from 7 Nights in Lofoten Islands, Norway and it was absolutely incredible. Tylers knowledge of the area and skies allowed us to capture the Northern Lights on more than several occasion's throughout the course. Accommodation was perfect for the trip, A home from home with a supermarket and coffee shop right on our doorstep. Tylers enthusiasm for photography and the love of the outdoors was very refreshing and infectious, As a commercial photographer by traded I went into this course looking to learn as much as I could and Tylers wealth of knowledge and patients allowed me to learn so much in such sort period of time. I would like to thank Tyler again and I look forward to going on another course very soon.

What you’ll learn
Learning with me on this photography tour is a personalised and flexible experience. I encourage you to ask as many questions as you like; this is your opportunity to get the most out of our time together. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine advanced techniques, I’ll guide you through skills like bracketing for dynamic range, long exposures to capture movement, and refining your compositions, all explained in a way that suits your level. I’ll review your work in the field, provide constructive feedback, and share tips to improve your skills, from perfecting focus to using filters effectively. Most importantly, I want to inspire you to embrace your creativity and develop your own unique style, so you leave with not just great photos but work that truly feels like your own.
Here are a few of the key skills I can cover:
Camera Settings: Start with the basics—RAW, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. Learn how and when to use various modes on your camera to achieve the shot you want.
Composition: Discover the importance of composition in landscape photography. I’ll share what I look for when composing a compelling photograph.
Long Exposures: Learn how to create dramatic and interesting photographs using long exposure techniques.
Histogram: Master the art of reading histograms to expose correctly and capture maximum data without clipping.
Low Light: Explore techniques for photographing the night sky, including the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) if luck is on our side.
Bracketing Multiple Exposures: Learn how to capture multiple exposures for high dynamic range (HDR) scenes, ensuring no details are lost in highlights or shadows.
Editing: In the event of bad weather, I’ll demonstrate how I edit my photographs using Adobe Lightroom Classic with final touches in Photoshop.

FAQs
Due to Norwegian laws and regulations, I am unable to charge for transportation. Therefore, it is provided as a complimentary service and is not included in the workshop price.
No, my photography tours and workshops cater to all skill levels. I will provide personalised instruction to help you improve your photography skills, whether you’re a beginner or an advanced photographer.
I recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, various lenses (wide-angle, telephoto), a sturdy tripod, extra batteries, memory cards, weather-appropriate clothing, and comfortable walking shoes. A full packing list which includes recommended camera gear and clothing for winter in Norway will be emailed to you after you book.
The tour starts at 12:00 midday on the 13th February 2024. I will begin collecting my guests from either their hotel in Tromsø or from Tromsø (TOS) airport. We will stay in constant contact via the WhatsApp group leading up to the arrival day.
The trip will end roughly at 19:00 back in Tromsø.
You can typically fly direct from Oslo, Copenhagen, Gatwick, Helsinki, Berlin etc
I recommended using SkyScanner or Kiwi to find flights. Airlines you can use as well would be Norwegian or FlySAS.
We will be staying at the excellent Fjordbotn Camping which is idyllically located close to the fjord Stønesbotn on Nord-Senja. Fjordbotn Camping is an excellent starting point for exploring Senja and is central to a lot of the locations we will be visiting. There will be 2 people per cabin and you’ll have your own room in the cabin.
No, all tours are self-catering. We will visit the supermarket on the day of arrival to gather supplies and bring packed lunches each day. There will be opportunities to visit cafes and restaurants if time permits, but we will mostly be eating on the go.
Our accommodation also has an onsite restaurant which we used a lot last year. On the last night as well the owner will cook us a traditional Sami meal.
This tour involves moderate physical activity suitable for more fitness levels. Many locations are within a 10-15 minute walk from the car. You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and icy ground. As it’s also winter, there may be deep snow this can vary from half a foot to a meter deep. I will always ensure the path is safe and you’ll never have to break your way through.
Hiking to Segla in winter can be very dangerous due to the high risk of avalanches and unmarked trails. Ensuring the safety of my guests is my number one priority, so we will not be attempting this hike during the winter months. Instead, we will focus on other beautiful and safer locations that Senja has to offer, ensuring a memorable and secure experience for everyone.
I would recommended to budget at least £30-£50 per day. Everywhere accepts cards, so cash is not necessary.
Yes, if you are coming from the UK or Ireland, your data roaming will work and be charged to your data plan at home. If you’re coming from elsewhere, it might be worth getting an e-sim if your phone supports it.
