Donegal Photography Workshop
Join my Donegal photography workshop from 6th to 12th December 2025 and let me show you the very best of Ireland’s rugged northwest. As a professional photographer and Aurora guide, I’ll work closely with you in a small group of only five people, giving you plenty of personal attention. We’ll explore some of my favorite spots for Irish landscape photography, including Fanad Head Lighthouse, Malin Head, the Great Pollet Arch, and the famous Murder Hole Beach—ideal places for capturing incredible Irish seascapes.
To cut down on travel time and make sure you get more shooting opportunities, we’ll stay at two or three different locations during the week. This means we’ll be closer to each location, so you can spend more time shooting. I’ll guide you through camera settings, composition, long exposures, low-light photography, and editing. By the end of this Donegal photography workshop, you’ll have a stronger set of images, a deeper understanding of your equipment, and the confidence to continue developing as a photographer.
Secure your place for £1850 per person, with just a 15% deposit. This is your chance to learn from me, experience Donegal’s most beautiful landscapes, and return home with photos you’ll be proud to share.

Itinerary
Since 2017, I’ve been guiding photography workshops around Europe and have led well over 70 guided photography trips. Through this experience, I’ve learned that a rigid daily schedule can limit our chances of capturing the very best images. During this Donegal photography workshop, I’ll adapt each day to the weather, choosing locations based on the most favourable conditions. Each evening, I’ll finalise the next day’s itinerary and let you know when we’ll be heading out. This flexible approach ensures we’re always in the right place at the right time, making the most of Donegal’s breathtaking landscapes.
Day 1 – Arrival Day
Your journey begins at Dublin Airport (DUB), where I’ll start collecting participants from 9am onwards. Once everyone has arrived, we’ll travel together to our first accommodation. I’ve selected a range of comfortable hotels and guesthouses, allowing us to stay closer to our chosen shooting locations throughout the Donegal photography workshop. Check-in is at 2 pm and, after settling in, we’ll head out for our first sunset photography session. Later, we’ll return for dinner and talk through the plans for the coming days.
Days 2 to 6 – The Adventure
These five full days form the heart of our time together. Each morning will begin with a sunrise shoot, followed by a quick breakfast before we move on to the next location selected for its potential to deliver great images. By opting for a simple lunch in the field, we minimise downtime, ensuring we can keep shooting throughout the day and into the afternoon, all the way through to sunset.
In the evenings, after dinner, I’ll be available to review your images, answer your questions, and discuss techniques like composition, long exposures, low-light photography, and editing. By staying in two or three different places during the week, we reduce travel time and give ourselves more opportunities to capture the diverse beauty of Donegal.
Day 7 – Departure Day
On our final morning, we’ll start with one last sunrise shoot, followed by breakfast. After checking out, we’ll head to a nearby spot for a relaxed photography session, ending the workshop on a high note. We’ll wrap up around 2 pm and we’ll start making our way back to Dublin Airport (DUB)
Additional Details
- In December, sunrise is around 8:30 am and sunset is about 4 pm.
- Throughout the week, I’ll provide personal guidance and feedback, helping you build confidence and improve your photography skills.
By embracing this flexible, weather-driven approach, you’ll have the best possible chance of going home with a stunning collection of images that showcase Donegal’s unique beauty.
Places we’ll visit
Please Note: This is a suggested list of locations. Weather plays a significant role in shaping each day’s itinerary, so the locations we visit may vary from tour to tour. We could visit all of these or even more, depending on conditions and how much time we spend at certain places. Many of these locations offer diverse photo opportunities, giving you the freedom to explore and capture a variety of photographs.
Don’t just take my word for it…
THE REVIEWS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES
Just back from a fabulous workshop in Lofoten with Tyler. First off - Lofoten is a landscape photographer’s paradise with a multitude of stunning locations all within easy reach. This means more time photographing and less time driving between photo stops. Bear in mind that the weather is volatile. and can be absolutely wild. This means potentially days lost (as we found out) but can also give some incredible shooting conditions as the storms clear. Tyler is a superb photographer (check out his images if you haven't done so) and he knows the locations intimately. He is knowledgable and willing to provide as much guidance as you need or to leave you alone to do your own thing if that's what you prefer. He is also very skilled in using Lightroom/Photoshop and gave us a tutorial one evening which was incredibly useful. The upshot is that you are bound to come back with lots of memorable and stunning images. Oh, and Tyler has a great instinct for finding the Aurora which meant we were chasing it whenever the skies were clear. This resulted in a truly epic night at Vik beach where we captured the lights in all their glory. The cherry on the top of a truly memorable trip!
My trip to Senja with Chasing Light Tours was fantastic, the locations were great and the guiding first class. A real shout out goes to the choice of accommodation - comfortable and convenient with photo locations right on our doorstep! Adding to this a year later, having done a second trip with Tyler to the Lofoten Islands. A fantastic week which was well organised at every stage. He has a detailed knowledge of the classic locations to photograph, as well as small out of the way places that give you something different!
Highly Recommend Chasing Lights Tours. Just recently home from 7 Nights in Lofoten Islands, Norway and it was absolutely incredible. Tylers knowledge of the area and skies allowed us to capture the Northern Lights on more than several occasion's throughout the course. Accommodation was perfect for the trip, A home from home with a supermarket and coffee shop right on our doorstep. Tylers enthusiasm for photography and the love of the outdoors was very refreshing and infectious, As a commercial photographer by traded I went into this course looking to learn as much as I could and Tylers wealth of knowledge and patients allowed me to learn so much in such sort period of time. I would like to thank Tyler again and I look forward to going on another course very soon.

I was lucky enough to go on a photography tour to Lofoten last month with Chasing Lights Tours and I couldn't have asked for a better guide than Tyler. He is a knowledgeable and experienced photographer, and he provided valuable tips and advice on everything from camera set-ups through to post-production techniques. Throughout the tour, Tyler was easy going, generous and had a great sense of humour. He was also a confident and safe driver, taking us to some great locations in the archipelago. Thanks to his knowledge of the best viewing areas and an understanding of the necessary weather conditions, I was able to see the northern lights on two occasions! I had an amazing trip and felt that I learnt a lot during the tour. I am now more confident in using my camera kit and have some beautiful photos and memories of taking them which I will cherish. I can't recommend Tyler and Chasing Lights Tours highly enough - it was a fantastic experience, and I am very grateful to Tyler for making it so enjoyable.
The Lofoten Photography Tour with Chasing Light Tours was excellent! Tyler is an accomplished and creative photographer who is extremely professional and very knowledgeable. The entire tour was packed full of relevant information that was presented in a very accessible and user-friendly way, about focusing, aperture settings, shutter speeds, ISO settings and much, much more. This enabled me to use my camera to its full potential. The tour was also enjoyable and fun. Tyler looked after everyone extremely well and drove with care and skill on the icy roads. He took us to well-chosen locations that he had previously researched and visited to maximise photographic potential. The spacious accommodation that we stayed in was great and had all the amenities that we needed. I highly recommend going on a photography tour with Chasing Light Tours!
Tyler led us through a trip to Lofoten in the end of January 2023. His experience within this area, his patience with clients and aurora borealis (northern lights) forecasting skills made it a once in a lifetime experience. Tyler’s workshops consist of small groups, so he can pick everyone up at his/her photography level. Whether you are experienced or not, he‘ll improve you. Thanks for the great trip!
Just back from a fantastic trip with Tyler to the Lofoten Islands. The trip was managed expertly from start to finish, and the small group size meant you got as much or little tuition as you wanted. Tyler clearly knows the area intimately, and the right time to visit, and really enjoys the ever changing landscapes, he isn’t simply going through the motions. We even got woken late at night when Tyler spotted the lights and given the option to go out and see. You can tell he wants to get you the best experience, and photographic opportunities possible. I think it’s fair to say we all come back happy with our images and shared adventure, and I for one will be re-booking sometime soon. Life is all about getting these type of amazing experiences so if you get the chance, go for it. Thanks Tyler.
I was on the 7 nights Lofoten Islands photo tour with Tyler and 3 other photographers in October 2022. Tyler knows the Lofoten Islands very well and knows landscape and Northern Lights photography very well. He took us to many great locations. The weather was somewhat challenging with rain, some high winds and snow. But we were able to go out 3 nights for Auroras and got some nice photos. He provides help with camera settings to get the best captures. Group size is kept small. Follow his guidelines for clothing (make sure you have waterproof gloves and pants) and you can be comfortable in the weather. I can recommend Tyler to help you get the most out of a photography trip to the Lofoten Islands.
I have always wanted to visit Lofoten to take landscape photographs. A friend suggested Chasing Light Tours. I was not disappointed even though there were several rainy days. Tyler Collins was an outstanding tour leader. Apart from being a very competent photographer, he had expert knowledge of the area and took us to the best locations for the weather conditions. Tyler gave technical and composition advice where needed, in an pleasant and friendly manner. Tylor has years of experience in this field which is very apparent.
Tyler's tour of the Lofoten Islands was an incredible experience. If you are expecting 5 star hotels and fine dining look elsewhere but what you do get is real knowledge of the area and some great inspiration to take epic photos. We were lucky enough to see aurora 2 nights of the trip but the rest of the week was spent in some amazing places. Highly recommend Tyler Collins Photography
Been to Norway, Lofoten with Tyler, 7 days of photography, 7 great days in good company. Tyler nows photography and is very will prepared, get us to the right place at the right time, we visited amazing locations, Tyler gives good advies about focusing and composition. Driving on the ice roads is a skill, never felt unsafe for a moment! I would highly recommend booking one of their tours or workshops, you won't be disapointed.
I attended Tyler's Lofoten tour Feb 2020 and what an experience it was. We got some amazing photos and Tyler is a first class guide with great knowledge and experience with conditions being tough he still went out of his way to get the group to locations where others would have just said no it's snowing and subsequently we got amazing winter shots. I would wholeheartedly recommend Tyler as a guide and an expert on Northern lights with such experience and gut feelings which paid off with four nights of aurora activity. Book him now you won't regret it.
I recently returned from a workshop with Tyler at the Lofoten island's. The whole trip from start to finish was excellent. Even when conditions were extremely difficult for photography (2 day snow blizzard), we managed to get fantastic images, if it wasn't for Tylers determination to get us out, I would have stayed in the log cabin with the fire going! Tyler had obviously done his homework regarding sunrise and sunset locations, and due to this we got nice side lighting on each location. We were lucky enough to get aurora 4 nights out of 7 and the last night the sky exploded which put the icing on the cake. Tyler is a perfectionist when it comes to composition and i learnt a lot from him during this trip. If you are lokking a tour where you a going to visit Epic locations, get great tuition and brilliant craic Tylers your man.
What you’ll learn
Learning with me on this photography tour is a personalised and flexible experience. I encourage you to ask as many questions as you like; this is your opportunity to get the most out of our time together. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine advanced techniques, I’ll guide you through skills like bracketing for dynamic range, long exposures to capture movement, and refining your compositions, all explained in a way that suits your level. I’ll review your work in the field, provide constructive feedback, and share tips to improve your skills, from perfecting focus to using filters effectively. Most importantly, I want to inspire you to embrace your creativity and develop your own unique style, so you leave with not just great photos but work that truly feels like your own.
Here are a few of the key skills I can cover:
Camera Settings: Start with the basics—RAW, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO. Learn how and when to use various modes on your camera to achieve the shot you want.
Composition: Discover the importance of composition in landscape photography. I’ll share what I look for when composing a compelling photograph.
Long Exposures: Learn how to create dramatic and interesting photographs using long exposure techniques.
Histogram: Master the art of reading histograms to expose correctly and capture maximum data without clipping.
Low Light: Explore techniques for photographing the night sky, including the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) if luck is on our side.
Bracketing Multiple Exposures: Learn how to capture multiple exposures for high dynamic range (HDR) scenes, ensuring no details are lost in highlights or shadows.
Editing: In the event of bad weather, I’ll demonstrate how I edit my photographs using Adobe Lightroom Classic with final touches in Photoshop.
Your Guide
Photographer, Light Chaser, Aurora Guide, Web Dev, Biker, Daddy and I’ve got a very understanding girlfriend in no particular order.
Good to Know
UK ETA – Electronic Travel Authorisation: Because we’ll be transiting through Northern Ireland to reach Donegal, you’ll need to apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if you’re from a country that requires a visa to enter the UK.
Even if you’re flying into Dublin, the route to Donegal crosses into the UK (Northern Ireland), so the ETA is required for land transit as well.
The ETA costs £16, takes just a few minutes to apply for, and is usually approved within a few hours. Still, I recommend applying at least 3 days before travel to be safe.
Check if you need one and apply here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/electronic-travel-authorisation-eta
Flights: You will fly to Dublin Airport (DUB). If you’re flying in on the day the tour starts, you need to ensure your flight arrives no later than 10am. If you can’t get a flight before 10am, then I advise you to fly in a day or 2 earlier.
Meeting Point: The meeting point for the workshop will be Dublin Airport (DUB) or accommodation in the surrounding area from 9am.
Accommodation: We’ll be staying in a range of carefully selected hotels and guesthouses throughout the workshop. Each participant will have their own room, and breakfast will be included every morning. This approach will help minimise travel time and maximise the time you spend out shooting Donegal’s stunning landscapes.
Packing List: A full packing list will be emailed to you after you complete your booking.
Hiking – Some of the locations require some short hiking of up to 30-60 minutes. (It’s worth it!) You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and slippery ground.
UK Mobile Network – If coming from the UK, your data roaming will work and come out of your data back home.
