Discover the Enchanting Beauty of Donegal

Donegal is Ireland at its most raw and authentic, a county shaped by the Atlantic with soaring cliffs, vast golden beaches, remote mountains and winding country roads where beauty waits around every corner. It is a place where you can stand on a headland and feel completely alone with the ocean, where traditions run deep and the landscapes feel timeless.

Itinerary

Marble Arch, Donegal, Ireland
Marble Arch, Horn Head, Co. Donegal

Since 2017, I’ve been guiding photography workshops around Europe and have led well over 70 guided photography trips. Through this experience, I’ve learned that a rigid daily schedule can limit our chances of capturing the very best images. During this Donegal photography workshop, I’ll adapt each day to the weather, choosing locations based on the most favourable conditions. Each evening, I’ll finalise the next day’s itinerary and let you know when we’ll be heading out. This flexible approach ensures we’re always in the right place at the right time, making the most of Donegal’s breathtaking landscapes.

Day 1 – Arrival Day
Your journey begins at Dublin Airport (DUB), where I’ll start collecting participants from 9am onwards. Once everyone has arrived, we’ll travel together to our first accommodation. I’ve selected a range of comfortable hotels and guesthouses, allowing us to stay closer to our chosen shooting locations throughout the Donegal photography workshop. Check-in is at 2 pm and, after settling in, we’ll head out for our first sunset photography session. Later, we’ll return for dinner and talk through the plans for the coming days.

Days 2 to 6 – The Adventure
These five full days form the heart of our time together. Each morning will begin with a sunrise shoot, followed by a quick breakfast before we move on to the next location selected for its potential to deliver great images. By opting for a simple lunch in the field, we minimise downtime, ensuring we can keep shooting throughout the day and into the afternoon, all the way through to sunset.

In the evenings, after dinner, I’ll be available to review your images, answer your questions, and discuss techniques like composition, long exposures, low-light photography, and editing. By staying in two or three different places during the week, we reduce travel time and give ourselves more opportunities to capture the diverse beauty of Donegal.

Day 7 – Departure Day
On our final morning, we’ll start with one last sunrise shoot, followed by breakfast. After checking out, we’ll head to a nearby spot for a relaxed photography session, ending the workshop on a high note. We’ll wrap up around midday and we’ll start making our way back to Dublin Airport (DUB)

Additional Details

  • In December, sunrise is around 8:30 am and sunset is about 4 pm.
  • Throughout the week, I’ll provide personal guidance and feedback, helping you build confidence and improve your photography skills.

By embracing this flexible, weather-driven approach, you’ll have the best possible chance of going home with a stunning collection of images that showcase Donegal’s unique beauty.

  • An Port
  • Assaranca Waterfall

Many of these locations offer diverse photo opportunities, giving you the freedom to explore and capture a variety of photographs.

Don’t just take my word for it…

THE REVIEWS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES

Just back from a fabulous workshop in Lofoten with Tyler. First off - Lofoten is a landscape photographer’s paradise with a multitude of stunning locations all within easy reach. This means more time photographing and less time driving between photo stops. Bear in mind that the weather is volatile. and can be absolutely wild. This means potentially days lost (as we found out) but can also give some incredible shooting conditions as the storms clear. Tyler is a superb photographer (check out his images if you haven't done so) and he knows the locations intimately. He is knowledgable and willing to provide as much guidance as you need or to leave you alone to do your own thing if that's what you prefer. He is also very skilled in using Lightroom/Photoshop and gave us a tutorial one evening which was incredibly useful. The upshot is that you are bound to come back with lots of memorable and stunning images. Oh, and Tyler has a great instinct for finding the Aurora which meant we were chasing it whenever the skies were clear. This resulted in a truly epic night at Vik beach where we captured the lights in all their glory. The cherry on the top of a truly memorable trip!

My trip to Senja with Chasing Light Tours was fantastic, the locations were great and the guiding first class. A real shout out goes to the choice of accommodation - comfortable and convenient with photo locations right on our doorstep! Adding to this a year later, having done a second trip with Tyler to the Lofoten Islands. A fantastic week which was well organised at every stage. He has a detailed knowledge of the classic locations to photograph, as well as small out of the way places that give you something different!

Highly Recommend Chasing Lights Tours. Just recently home from 7 Nights in Lofoten Islands, Norway and it was absolutely incredible. Tylers knowledge of the area and skies allowed us to capture the Northern Lights on more than several occasion's throughout the course. Accommodation was perfect for the trip, A home from home with a supermarket and coffee shop right on our doorstep. Tylers enthusiasm for photography and the love of the outdoors was very refreshing and infectious, As a commercial photographer by traded I went into this course looking to learn as much as I could and Tylers wealth of knowledge and patients allowed me to learn so much in such sort period of time. I would like to thank Tyler again and I look forward to going on another course very soon.

What you’ll learn

Learning with me on this photography tour is a relaxed, personal, and flexible experience. There’s no pressure, no one-size-fits-all approach, just the chance to grow your skills at your own pace in a supportive environment. I encourage you to ask as many questions as you like, whether it’s about camera settings, composition, or post-processing. This is your time, and I’m here to help you make the most of it.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to push your creative boundaries further, I’ll guide you through techniques that suit your level. That might mean learning how to bracket exposures for tricky light, using long exposures to create drama and mood, or refining the way you see and frame a scene. I’ll review your images in the field, offer practical, constructive feedback, and share tips along the way, from nailing your focus to getting the most out of your filters.

Most importantly, I want to help you feel confident in your photography and inspired to develop your own style. The goal isn’t just to come home with great photos, but to come away feeling like those images truly belong to you.

Here are a few of the key skills I can cover:

Camera Settings: We’ll make sure the foundations are solid. I’ll walk you through shooting in RAW, using Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO effectively, and help you understand the different modes on your camera so you feel in control of every shot.

Composition: Composition is everything in landscape photography. I’ll show you what I look for when framing an image and help you develop your eye for strong, thoughtful compositions.

Long Exposures: If the conditions are right, we’ll experiment with long exposures to create striking, atmospheric images — from smoothing out water to capturing cloud movement.

Histogram: We’ll dive into how to read your histogram and use it to expose your images properly, making sure you retain as much detail as possible.

Low Light Photography: When the opportunity arises, we’ll look at how to handle low-light conditions — including how to photograph the night sky, and even the Northern Lights if we’re lucky enough to see them.

Bracketing & Dynamic Range: I’ll show you how to bracket exposures to deal with tricky lighting and high-contrast scenes, ensuring you don’t lose important details in highlights or shadows.

Editing: If we run into some poor weather, we’ll use the time to look at post-processing. I’ll walk you through my editing workflow using Adobe Lightroom Classic, with finishing touches in Photoshop. It’s a great opportunity to see how images come to life after the shot.

You’ll have full support throughout the photography workshop, but I’ll never be over your shoulder unless you want me to be. My role is to help you feel confident, creative, and completely at ease behind the camera.

Good to Know

UK ETA – Electronic Travel Authorisation: Because we’ll be transiting through Northern Ireland to reach Donegal, you’ll need to apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if you’re from a country that requires a visa to enter the UK.

Even if you’re flying into Dublin, the route to Donegal crosses into the UK (Northern Ireland), so the ETA is required for land transit as well.

The ETA costs £16, takes just a few minutes to apply for, and is usually approved within a few hours. Still, I recommend applying at least 3 days before travel to be safe.

Check if you need one and apply here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/electronic-travel-authorisation-eta

Flights: You will fly to Dublin Airport (DUB). If you’re flying in on the day the tour starts, you need to ensure your flight arrives no later than 10am. If you can’t get a flight before 10am, then I advise you to fly in a day or 2 earlier.

Meeting Point: The meeting point for the workshop will be Dublin Airport (DUB) or accommodation in the surrounding area from 9am.

Accommodation: We’ll be staying in a range of carefully selected hotels and guesthouses throughout the workshop. Each participant will have their own room, and breakfast will be included every morning. This approach will help minimise travel time and maximise the time you spend out shooting Donegal’s stunning landscapes.

Packing List: A full packing list will be emailed to you after you complete your booking.

Hiking – Some of the locations require some short hiking of up to 30-60 minutes. (It’s worth it!) You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and slippery ground.

UK Mobile Network – If coming from the UK, your data roaming will work and come out of your data back home.
