Itinerary

Having led numerous Iceland Photo Tours (I’ve lost count 🙈), I’ve refined this itinerary to perfection, ensuring you get the most out of your experience. From the moment you arrive, I’ll take care of everything from airport transfers, transportation, accommodation, and any photography tuition, leaving you free to focus (no pun intended 😂) on capturing the magic of Iceland.

I work closely with the weather to visit locations under the best possible conditions. This ensures I’m putting you in the right place at the right time. Each morning, we’ll be on location roughly one hour before sunrise, and we’ll stay at each sunset location until the light is gone.

The tour begins and ends at Keflavik International Airport (KEF). When booking flights, please arrive no later than midday on arrival day. If you need to travel the day before, let me know, and I can arrange to collect you from your accommodation in the Keflavik or Reykjavik area.

Day 1 – Arrival Day

Today your Iceland Photo Tour begins.

You will fly to Keflavik (KEF) airport, where I’ll be ready to pick you up in our nine-seater minibus. Exact timings will be arranged in our private WhatsApp group leading up to the tour, but generally, pickups will be no later than midday. If you choose to arrive the day before, I can collect you from your accommodation either near Keflavik airport or in the Reykjavik area.

After gathering everyone, we’ll make a stop at a supermarket to stock up on groceries for the first few days. If we encounter epic light on our journey to our first accommodation in the Vik area, we’ll be sure to make a stop for a quick shoot!

Once we’ve all settled in, we’ll go over the plan for the week. If time allows, we’ll squeeze in a sunset shoot, or if clear skies are forecast, we’ll head out on our first aurora chase.

Day 2 and Day 3 – Vik Adventures

This is where the real adventure begins.

Over the next couple of days in the Vik area, we’ll be photographing at every opportunity we can get. We’ll be getting up early every morning (regardless of weather) to be on location one hour before sunrise. After each sunrise shoot, we’ll head for coffee or breakfast before moving on to our next location.

For each sunset shoot, we’ll arrive roughly two hours beforehand to scope out and perfect our compositions.

In the evening, the Northern Lights chase is on!

Day 4 and Day 5 – Jökulsárlón/Höfn Exploration

Today we’ll make our way to the Jökulsárlón/Höfn area. We’ll focus on iconic locations such as Diamond Beach, Vestrahorn, and Eystrahorn! Staying dedicated to capturing the best shots, our early mornings and pre-sunset hours will remain our primary focus, with each location offering unique photographic opportunities.

Once again, if clear skies allow, we’ll head out in the evening for another aurora chase.

Day 6 – Vik Return

We’ll make our way back towards the Vik area for another night. This will give us a chance to explore a few more spots along the coast and a few other favourite spots finishing up with a sunset shoot at Víkurfjara Black Sand Beach.

Along the way, we’ll stop at any interesting locations that catch our eye, giving you even more opportunities to capture Iceland’s stunning scenery.

If clear skies allow, we’ll head out for one last aurora chase in the evening.

Day 7 – Keflavík Transition & Final Sunset Shoot

Today is still a full shooting day as we make our way towards the Reykjanes Peninsula area. Along the way, we’ll stop for any exciting photo opportunities that arise.

Our last outdoor shoot will be at Reykjanestá for a sunset session, offering a final chance to photograph Iceland’s dramatic coastline.

You will need to book accommodation for your final night in Iceland (15th), as the tour concludes after the last sunset shoot. I recommend staying at Konvin Hotel, which provides a convenient shuttle service to the airport the next morning.

Packing Tip: While a full packing list will be emailed to you upon booking, remember to pack light but be prepared for all weather conditions. Layers, waterproof gear, and sturdy footwear are essential. Don’t forget extra batteries and memory cards!

Note: Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for quick changes in plans. If conditions aren’t favorable, we’ll have an indoor session focusing on post-processing techniques or image critiques.

Just came back from Iceland from one of Tylers workshop and had the time of my life. I learnt so much from this workshop. Tyler was very attentive to all that were on the group, answered all my questions without hesitation. If you are looking to have more knowledge in photography this workshop is exactly what you want and need. You will go back home wanting more. Thank you for all.

This was my first photography workshop. I am a fairly novice landscape photographer. I learnt a huge amount very quickly in camera setup and composition. Early hops to catch the sunrise. Tyler was patient and helpful, and easy company. Lots of help after shooting with Lightroom as well. What you get out of this will depend on your experience - if you are very experienced then it will be tips and being taken to good locations, if less experienced then the basics will be covered. I would happily join Tyler again for a workshop. Really enjoyable, thanks.

I had a fantastic week in Senja, Norway, with Tyler. His in-depth knowledge of the best locations around the island & his photography expertise meant I came back with some great shots. Thanks Tyler.

Tyler's tour of the Lofoten Islands was an incredible experience. If you are expecting 5 star hotels and fine dining look elsewhere but what you do get is real knowledge of the area and some great inspiration to take epic photos. We were lucky enough to see aurora 2 nights of the trip but the rest of the week was spent in some amazing places. Highly recommend Tyler Collins Photography

What you’ll learn

Learning with me on this photography tour is a relaxed, personal, and flexible experience. There’s no pressure, no one-size-fits-all approach, just the chance to grow your skills at your own pace in a supportive environment. I encourage you to ask as many questions as you like, whether it’s about camera settings, composition, or post-processing. This is your time, and I’m here to help you make the most of it.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to push your creative boundaries further, I’ll guide you through techniques that suit your level. That might mean learning how to bracket exposures for tricky light, using long exposures to create drama and mood, or refining the way you see and frame a scene. I’ll review your images in the field, offer practical, constructive feedback, and share tips along the way, from nailing your focus to getting the most out of your filters.

Most importantly, I want to help you feel confident in your photography and inspired to develop your own style. The goal isn’t just to come home with great photos, but to come away feeling like those images truly belong to you.

Here are a few of the key skills I can cover:

Camera Settings: We’ll make sure the foundations are solid. I’ll walk you through shooting in RAW, using Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO effectively, and help you understand the different modes on your camera so you feel in control of every shot.

Composition: Composition is everything in landscape photography. I’ll show you what I look for when framing an image and help you develop your eye for strong, thoughtful compositions.

Long Exposures: If the conditions are right, we’ll experiment with long exposures to create striking, atmospheric images — from smoothing out water to capturing cloud movement.

Histogram: We’ll dive into how to read your histogram and use it to expose your images properly, making sure you retain as much detail as possible.

Low Light Photography: When the opportunity arises, we’ll look at how to handle low-light conditions — including how to photograph the night sky, and even the Northern Lights if we’re lucky enough to see them.

Bracketing & Dynamic Range: I’ll show you how to bracket exposures to deal with tricky lighting and high-contrast scenes, ensuring you don’t lose important details in highlights or shadows.

Editing: If we run into some poor weather, we’ll use the time to look at post-processing. I’ll walk you through my editing workflow using Adobe Lightroom Classic, with finishing touches in Photoshop. It’s a great opportunity to see how images come to life after the shot.

You’ll have full support throughout the photography workshop, but I’ll never be over your shoulder unless you want me to be. My role is to help you feel confident, creative, and completely at ease behind the camera.

Good to Know

Flights – Fly to Keflavik (KEF) airport. Most major European airports will have direct flights to Iceland.

Accommodation – Due to limited availability and the shift of many houses to dorm-style accommodation, we’ll be transitioning to multiple stay locations. All accommodation will be in twin-share rooms, shared with someone of the same sex. This actually works in our favour as we’ll be able to stay closer to locations, maximising shooting time and reducing driving time! For those who prefer their own room, a single supplement is available; however, due to the high cost of accommodation in Iceland, this can be upwards of a £1,000 or more.

Self Catering / Meals – All my tours are self catering. We will visit the supermarket (Bonus) on the day we arrive and gather what’s needed for a few days so that we can bring packed lunches with us each day. We will revisit the supermarket a couple of times throughout the trip too. There will be opportunities throughout the trip to visit cafes and the odd restaurant if we have time. But primarily, we will be eating as we go.

Hiking – Many of the locations are easy access from the car. You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and slippery ground.

Spending Money – I average between £200-300 for the week. Card is accepted everywhere, cash isn’t needed.

UK Mobile Network – If coming from the UK, your data roaming will work and come out of your data back home.

FAQs

My FAQ section is designed to provide you with all the essential information you need about my Iceland Photography Tours.

I am unable to charge for transportation. Therefore, it is provided as a complimentary service and is not included in the workshop price.

Airport transfers are included only on the first and last day of the tour. If you arrive before the tour starts or leave after it ends, you will need to arrange your own transportation to and from your accommodation/hotel.

While my photography tours cater to all skill levels, having a basic understanding of photography will enhance your experience. It’s helpful to be familiar with concepts like the exposure triangle, histograms, and terms such as exposure bracketing, exposure compensation, and focus bracketing. If you’re new to these ideas, I recommend reading this blog post for essential tips to prepare for a photography tour.

Being comfortable with your camera is just as important as understanding photography concepts. The more familiar you are with adjusting settings quickly, the better equipped you’ll be to capture great shots in dynamic environments. On the other hand, if you’re still learning to navigate your camera’s settings, you may find yourself missing key moments while making adjustments.

During the tour, I’ll provide personalised instruction to help you improve, whether you’re just starting out or are already an experienced photographer.

I recommend bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, various lenses (wide-angle, telephoto), a sturdy tripod, extra batteries, memory cards, weather-appropriate clothing, and comfortable walking shoes. A full packing list which includes recommended camera gear and clothing for winter in Iceland will be emailed to you after you book.

Yes you can, but there are important regulations to follow. See here for more information.

The tour starts at midday on the date of chosen tour. I will begin collecting everyone from the airport or their accommodation in the area. We will stay in constant contact via the WhatsApp group leading up to the arrival day.

The tour will end after a final sunset shoot on the last day of the tour.

You will need to book your flight to Keflavik (KEF) airport. Most major European airports will have direct flights to Iceland.

We stay in comfortable guesthouses and hotels, carefully chosen for their great locations and warmth. Accommodation is based on twin-share rooms unless you choose to book a single supplement.

Twin-share rooms mean you will share a room with another guest of the same sex, with separate beds. If you’re travelling with a friend or partner then you will share with them.

Yes. If you prefer a private room, please contact me before booking. Single room supplements can be as high, if not more than £1000 per tour.

No, all tours are self-catering. We will visit the supermarket on the day of arrival to gather some basic supplies and bring packed lunches each day. There will also be opportunities to visit cafes and restaurants if time permits, but we will mostly be eating on the go.

Many locations are within a 10-15 minute walk from the car. You must be able to walk on uneven, sometimes steep and slippery ground.

I would recommended to budget at least £30-£50 per day. Everywhere accepts cards, so cash is not necessary.

Yes, if you are coming from the UK or Ireland, your data roaming will work and be charged to your data plan at home. If you’re coming from elsewhere, you will need to check with your operator what their policies are.
